Last night at 18 Wooster (the old Deitch gallery) CREEP did an awesome live performance, complete with cellists and projections. It was the premiere of music videos by both Thalia Mavros and myself. The whole gallery was packed with such amazing artists, including Ryan Mcginness, who gave me my very first job in New York City. Pretty amazing to see him watching my work almost nine years later.

"Creep is an electronic group based in Brooklyn, New York. Their first single ‘Days’ has recently been signed to Young Turks Records, and a remix version has already been put out by Romy of the band The XX (Young Turks Records as well). Lauren Flax has been a DJ for a decade, here is an interview I did with her over at the Brooklyn Rail in 2009 in which she talks about her single ‘You’ve Changed’, featuring Australia’s Sia. Her musical partner Lauren Dillard, (known to some as Lauren Chillhard) was a bit of a scene queen back in the day in the city we both grew up in.

The Laurens sat down via email to do this interview for 3:AM, and in doing so, we discovered some 3:AM connections. Small world. (Note the Ellen Frances connection the ladies mention, of (3:AM’s former poetry editor) Tao Lin’s camp, for example.) Likeminded people, I think is the answer to the interesting coincidence. I received a nice message from Mike Bushnell. In the message he wrote this sentence:

"You are a gentle world slayer."

It is perhaps the most radical compliment I have ever been given.

He is also sending me a review copy of his new book Traumahawk. I can't really comment on it - being that I have not actually read it yet, but I love the title.

(it also recently came to mind that this is the same person who had an afro and was apart of the 'jaguar uprising' -- an internet group that made some kind of weird parody videos in 2007. They made one about me, but I honestly cannot remember what on earth the point of it was.)

I have not been speaking much on the wonderful opportunity I have been given, but after months of phone calls between NY and LA,it seems sort of official now - so I am posting about it.

Last week I signed paperwork to officially enter into an Attachment Agreement with William Morris Endeavor to Produce/Direct the feature film adaptation of the Penguin novel Light Boxes by Shane Jones.

The film is in the very very early stages of development, with consultation and possible official collaborations with some of my dear friends in art and film. I foresee great things for this project, as well as a lot of work!

This post is good. How Shane Jones writes great novels. Has to do mostly with not peeing and listening to rap / drawing dollar signs.

I get excited when Kristin Iskandrian sends me emails. Also she hangs the most amazing wall paper while wearing the most amazing dresses. She also wrote this post, which I love.

I get great footwear/toy recommendations from this rad mom in Minnesota I have never even met! I still have a few packets of the tea she sent me and it makes me feel special and kind of loved whenever I open one. That might sound kind of gushy and lame but it's true. New topic: My horoscope was good today. I read it and thought: "Yes".

Because this is my blog about me I can never have too many photos of myself. It's allowed and expected.

M: How did the Light Boxes book trailer come about? Can I expect to be seeing it on a TV anytime soon, or is purely an Internet thing?

SJ: Purely internet. It was done by a brilliant artist named Ellen Frances who I've corresponded with for years. I think I've only met her once. She really loved the book and when I was thinking of people to do a trailer she was the first person I thought of. What she came up with was pretty amazing. There's also a German trailer, which is a very different thing.

JM: What do you think of the people who are spending $250 on first edition copies of Light Boxes?

SJ: I'm really flattered that people are that interested in the book. That, for them, it's collectable. I recently received an email from a guy in the UK who said he spent $400 on a first edition signed. I didn't know how to respond to that. Just amazing. When the book first came out, me and Adam struggled to sell a copy for $5 at literary festivals. Crazy.

Today I was at a brunch meeting with a writer / director / producer and old friend. We talked about many things, one -- coincidentally -- being James Franco; particularly the variety of projects he takes on, the diversity of budget and the appreciation he has for the artistry of a story. I suddenly feel some sort of bizarre, perhaps (definitely) ridiculous, drive to work with James Franco at some point in my career.

BACK N THE DAY

Today I had to bounce around websites and blogs looking for inspiration for a project I am art directing. I hadn't been to my friend Lisa's website or blog in quite a while. I decided to look her up and found she had a post that threw me into a time warp. (though it offered nothing for said art direction project which is web based...) It was a post on Koyaanisqatsi. I saw this and Naqoyqatsi in the theater when I was enrolled in art school at MCAD in the early 2000's. I was profoundly moved and altered by these films, and the series - which I saw all of later. It encompassed so much of what I felt I could relate to about art, about experimental film making and about myself. It was a great inspiration to me in my early 20's. I'm very glad Lisa posted the video. It reminded me to remember.

Koyaanisqatsi (English pronunciation: /ˈkɔɪ.ɑːnɪsˈkɑːtsiː/ KOY-ah-nis-KAHT-see), also known as Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance, is a 1982 film directed by Godfrey Reggio with music composed by Philip Glass and cinematography by Ron Fricke. The film consists primarily of slow motion and time-lapse stock footage of cities and many natural landscapes across the United States. The visual tone poem contains neither dialogue nor a vocalized narration: its tone is set by the juxtaposition of images and music. Reggio explains the lack of dialog by stating "it's not for lack of love of the language that these films have no words. It's because, from my point of view, our language is in a state of vast humiliation. It no longer describes the world in which we live.

The film is the first in the Qatsi trilogy of films: it is followed by Powaqqatsi (1988) and Naqoyqatsi (2002). The trilogy depicts different aspects of the relationship between humans, nature, and technology. Koyaanisqatsi is the best known of the trilogy and is considered a cult film. MUBI

When I was contacted out of the blue by MUBI asking to show my short video work only days after receiving a random email from someone else asking me to use their music in my videos, I could not help but wonder what was going on. I did some looking into it and turns out MUBI is a totally legit amazing site for film, video and cinema. It works in association with Criterion and even has the blessing of Martin Scorsese. Their library of films is top notch and their curation of artists is impecable (obvs ha). I have to mention, since I also am a designer, that the website itself is quite aesthetically pleasing! When they asked if I would submit information to them for a post I said of course. Anyway I am so glad they got in contact with me and I hope to work with them further.

In my digital mail today I received a link to the Shane Jones trailer posting in Italy from Isbn Endizioni.

I was happy to see it and of course am always in favor of Shane's successes -- as he and his wife (who sends me horoscopes!), though I have not really spent time with them, seem to be great people. Obviously I was happy to hear that Penguin Books has purchased his second novel Daniel Fights a Hurricane -- I am looking forward to my copy!

Also of note: if you are a waster of time on the internet, you may be happy to see there is also a new daily blog of rambling blah blah's by Shane to add to my list of ways to avoid cleaning the kitchen by internetting. At first glance of course, I primarily took notice of the condensed sans serif that is, if not mirroring, the Trade Gothic family I am paid to obsess over daily. Good.

Speaking of book trailers, someone emailed me telling me they were a composer and asking me to use their music in my next book trailer. (I always enjoy getting these sorts of random emails!) They explained to me they want "to gain a foothold in this emerging, rapidly-evolving medium". I was kind of amazed. I suppose I underestimated the power / popularity of the book trailer! I haven't listened to the music samples he sent me. I will some time soon.

Anyway -- it is not too different from the American and UK versions

but here are Spain and Italy side by side.

If you want to read about my daily goings on you have to go to my other blog. It's become very depressing of course, as I am being haunted by an avalanche of evil led by a psychotic sociopath. If dramatized properly it would make for a great comic book, movie or novel I think. Especially since the villain is currently walking around dressed like a dead woman who sings karaoke!

(Avoiding responsibility has never looked so pathetic!)

I am still only a few pages in on Infinite Jest. With only one chapter to go I seem to have drifted away from the Ames. Reading has proven to be the best thing for me in one way or another lately... besides, the TV only wakes my daughters top tooth up.

Intense levels of stress have weighed on me physically so I am continually sick and constnatly schleping to work in the cold, to and from the train on long walks with a person strapped to my chest -- both of us sneezing.

Posted Today

Shortly after giving birth to my daughter I was honored to be asked to work on two exciting projects; a trailer for the amazing author Shane Jones, and an opportunity to re-design the Lumiere award for the International 3D Society in Los Angeles.

Working on this award was particularly suited to me because of my background in dance; which is initially why I was considered for the job in May. While I do not have a background in sculpting, like other designers pitching for the job, I do have a full fledged understanding of what pulling emotion from the soul can do to the trained body. My initial sketches were very balletic. Working with the amazing people at the 3D Society we tweaked my sketches to maintain poise and grace while also conveying a solid strength in posture. I was privileged to be able to work with the sculptor from R.S. Owens, best known as the creators of the Oscar -- who also produced the final statue.

I am thankful for such a lovely opportunity to work with such lovely people.

If 2001 A Space Odyssey were a religion I would be in church every sunday.
Thats how important I think this movie is.

The link above is one theory on the ending. I disagree with it because, as a commenter noted, it is based on the established 'religious belief' of reincarnation. I believe the ending of the film to be about planes of existence, space within time lapses of being... that events are superimposed on one another in the absence of controlled atmospheres -- through it one can fully understand existing in non existence -- and taking into consideration the theory that the earths orbit/revolutions form gravity, this is therefor likely to control events taking place within a construct of time... one that we all experience on earth. Away from earth however, there are multiple versions of time, space and being --and the monolith is a window into that. I could discuss this movie for hours... my idea of a good time is to do so over a cup of coffee at 10 am on a Saturday.

Today I took 100 pictures of Oona Moon who is an excellent eater of carrots. I put glasses on her and she seemed to really like looking like a cooler version of rivers cuomo. (see my facebook) Alfie met Oona, who danced to the music playing in the resteraunt where we went for brunch, by way of going from tense legs to noodle legs and back again over and over. She has me so awestruck I should have named her Universe, Space or Galaxy. Moon holds good meaning though... (see below)

When Zachary German was my 'personal assistant' I told him he really should have a radio show on EVR because as part of his 'job' I asked him to make me a play list. It was really good. The other day I was looking at my facebook and 'was all'; "who is jadakiss german"? I clicked on the photo and it was Zachary. There was a link to his radio show. I didn't listen to it because you had to download it off of z-share or whatever and I'm not that patient. It's 2010, everything should be instant. duh. BUT I still am linking it and endorsing it because even though I cant vouch for his writing or that good design sense, but horribly mean publishing house he is affiliated with... he is kind of cool. Please upload your show to an ftp and code it into a player on your blog or just have your publisher sponsor an hour of you on EVR. Also, I just realized that I never printed more of my zine of him and I therefore owe his mom 10.00.

I'VE BEEN REALLY BUSY.
Taking on side jobs mixed with working full time added to my home life doesn't leave a lot of room for screwing around. I'm thinking I might post some studies I did (of myself obviously -duh) which were actually bennificial to a job I am doing, though I cant really post anything about the actual job. I really wish there were about 100 more hours in each day because if there were I would be pretty close to finishing a fine art series of something, have a full length album of weirdness and be about halfway done with my memoir. But, alas I shall just go make some organic mac and cheese, watch intervision and stare at the three bags of laundry I'm trying to force myself to do tomorrow. Isn't this blog post just enthrawling? Oh and also, I am taking on freelance work but lately I'm into making bank. I had to turn down a job from someone who asked nicely and then I felt kind of like shit. Even though I have nothing at all to do with the lit world, I kind of really (<--- pairing of words makes no sense but I do it all the time) am super amused by the fact that people from the (ny) literary scene have been asking me to be involved in their projects since 2008.

If you ever worked at a bodega and took my order I would always ask for this: "a large yellow gatoriad. lemon lime.. the yellow one, yellow gatoraid."

ZINE
I just saw that Alfie made a post about accepting submissions to the new FAKEORANGE. This makes me excited. I am a big fan of zines, especially those run by talented, multi-disciplinary, awesome people. The zine is created and produced in Brooklyn, NY, with Alison, Alfie & friends doing all of the printing / screen printing / layout. I always submit because I love this zine, but also think its a good exercise to make some work outside of work. I once was featured on a cover & tote bag for the first edition evuun!

Thanks to this zine, I have a lot of good memories of hanging out with other young artists at release parties, a joint party we had one year at the Chelsea (Art Party at the Salon for Geniuses + FO!) and last year during the collaboration they did with OAK, through which I just sold these!
I would encourage anyone with poems, drawings, paintings or photography to submit! (To submit contact Alfie)

Among the handful of amazing women who wrote to me about my posts during pregnancy, one was the talented and insightful Kristin Iskandrian. Now that my pregnancy is over I still get the pleasure of receiving an email from her here and there. This week I was delighted to see she is doing some posting over at HTML Giant, a site that is run by testosterone most of the time... This morning I woke up at dawn. O was mumbling to herself and eating her hands. On my night stand was a stack of books sent to me. I picked up the lightest one and began to read it to my child. If you have ever read The Nightmare Filled You With Scary you may have told me it was not a good book for a baby. You're right, it might not be a good book for a baby... that understands English! O speaks in crazy outer depths of space tongue and I think she loved it. (she was mostly just interested in trying to roll over while eating her hands anyway) --There was once a post on a blog now defunct which I saved, thinking it was just a beautiful short poem. I was excited to turn a page this morning and find it was actually an excerpt from this book!

When I first read an excerpt of Light Boxes online I felt like I was witnessing the birth of one of the greatest works of art of our time. This was when it had first come out on Publishing Genius. I blogged about it here and was sent a copy of the book with a note inside thanking me for the blog post. The novel exceeded my expectations. The entire book was a work of art. The layout of the text was considered in a way that made the book itself feel alive. The story was written from abstract perspectives, descriptions were poetic and the imagery breathtaking and vivid. It was not too surprising that the book was picked up by Penguin and the film rights sold to Spike Jonze. Having an original copy of the indie release, I can proudly say I knew this little book when...

I never knew much of Shane Jones. I knew he had a blog (I found one of my videos on it in 2008) and his name was thrown around amidst all of the Brooklyn writerly types. Even with his name amidst this 'hipster'-esque group of same sames - I was pleased to find he did not fall into their line of piggy backing. Instead in emails he seems kind and sincere and his writing is actually beautiful, revolutionary and yes, I will say it... pure genius.

When Shane wrote to ask me if I would like to make something for the book release, obviously I said yes. It was a great escape for me this week to work on a short book trailer for the novel's release through Penguin (May 25, 2010). The novel sets the imagination on fire and the only downside of doing anything for this book is not having enough time or resources to work on it for the rest of my life! This sounds dramatic but I kind of do mean it...

Book Review:
A small town is besieged by “February.” The winter month, yes, but also a powerful, godlike being of the same name who won’t allow the sun to return. Something else is going on: Ever since February came, flight has been banned, and children have gone missing.

At the center is a balloonist named Thaddeus, whose daughter has disappeared and whose wife drowned herself in the marsh. The fever-dream fable winding its way through Jones’s debut novel takes many detours, but the town’s fruitless, ambitious battle against winter propels it. They attempt to wipe out the snow by pouring troughs of hot water downhill, but February counters with a prodigious moss crop that covers houses and chokes animals. When a horde of children living in underground tunnels presents a war plan, February’s wife tricks Thaddeus into believing it’s spring.

We expect a vibrant imagination in our authors, but charm is an underrated quality, and Jones has both in spades. Light Boxes twists through a waking nightmare, where violence slashes through characters but vines and flowers emerge in blood’s stead. The macabre feels more mischievous than menacing, which allows Jones to occasionally overindulge his precious side, though never enough to make us wince. Tempted though we were to read the endless winter as strict metaphor, Jones is a little too freewheeling to let anything stick. Instead, we end up with a sweet, surreal battle in the snow. - Time Out Chicago

+ I DONT SEE LEVEL. MY EYES ARE UNEVEN. This weekend I went to Jimmy's opening. It was lovely and I felt proud. I met a writer named Jean-eric Boulin. He told me a few times he had been on french TV. He said something about Opium Magazine. He frequently asked me if I had grievances. I emailed Marie Richer for approval because she is funny and lives in Paris. Apparently I had passed my limit on tolerance of red wine, because looking back, the email makes no sense. Has anyone read his books? • I passed the posters for Ryan Mcginness's show a few times. I contemplated going, since working for him was one of my first jobs in New York, but I didn't. I did stop by Mike Perry's show and I brought Lula and Circusdog-Prudence. I saw several people from art school. I think almost everyone there was from art school. Emily was drinking champagne from her purse on the sidewalk in a pretty dress.

if we are all we take in from birth to death we are then everything we have witnessed through any of our senses. though we process the experiences differently nothing can ever be completely unique to itself. how can there be a clear owned view of the world or life or a non bias uninfluenced view of anything? i believe the best answer i can think of right now are people who live alone on an island. unfortunately for my peace of mind and clarity, i cannot leave new york city.

Emily CM Anderson is one of my all time favorite designers. She was the girl I wanted to be in art school and very wise when it comes to how to carry your bag of rocks. She let me shoot her in a dress I basically sewed on to her cause she's cool like that. More here.

Moving on; sorry to whoever read that massive long iphone blog last night. YIKES. I missed the deadline for '3rd place'. I have too much going on, not that I would have it any other way usually.. but I hate missing out on chances to post work. It's snowing in New York City.

The new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album leaked last week.
I was interested in hearing it because I have been a long time fan of the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs - but also because I had heard Nick Zinner played synths and not guitar in most - if not all - of the album. After a brief listen I have to say nothing is blowing my mind. I think it will sink in and there will defintately be good remix's coming down the line shortly - because it seems to be an album that lends itself more to that than any of their prior records. I do miss Nick Zinners guitar. But you can decide for yourself:

This morning I got up and decided I don't like my new couch. Then I got in a cab. I gave him a twenty and asked for fourteen back, then I got out. I went to the third floor. When I came back down I walked west and got coffee. Then I went through security and up to the sixteenth floor. I started the program InDesign. Is this post guilty of over sharing? Gawker wrote an article on people who over-share last night. It was written as if it was some new phenomena. I don't think it is a psychological problem, which is what Gawker stated. I think its just what you do when you are not in love.

I think this is an interesting post about the beauty of the natural female body from another womans perspective.
Today I exchanged emails with these people, thanks to Jimmy. Their work is beautiful and interesting. I could live in London.
